Tyler and Bone Marrow Donation Awareness – Third Wish Machine Grant!
Forest Family member Tyler wishes to raise awareness for different types of life-threatening blood diseases that can be treated with Bone Marrow transplants, with the goal to educate, register donors, and ultimately save lives.
In late 2017, Tyler donated his bone marrow to a person in desperate need, and he aims to share his story – how easy the process is, the impact of saving a life, and the fulfillment he feels from getting out of his comfort zone and doing something that could change someone else’s life.
“I’m Tyler Henke, and I wished to raise awareness for different types of life-threatening blood diseases at Electric Forest through the Wish Machine, in hopes of finding loving people who will be willing help fight these diseases. In many cases, patients suffering from one of these diseases have very limited options for treatment, and Bone Marrow transplants are often the only way to save their life.
The reason I submitted this wish is because I am a Bone Marrow Donor through the Be The Match Program. During my sophomore year of college, Be The Match had a registry set up in my Union on Campus. I had never heard of it before, and as I was walking by I paused to learn more – it took five minutes to do a mouth swab and register for their program. As the years passed, I honestly completely forgot that I had signed up. Then, one day in September of 2017, I received a call asking if I was still willing to volunteer to donate my Bone Marrow to someone suffering from Leukemia, with the potential to save their life. I immediately said yes.
The following month I was in Madison, Wisconsin donating my Bone Marrow. Be The Match provides the best care for the volunteers who are going through the process of donating bone marrow. I had the kindest, most polite doctors and hospital staff taking care of me. I went into surgery that morning around 9am and was unconscious for about five hours while the doctors performed the bone marrow extraction process. I admittedly felt some slight pain after surgery, but I did not experience the debilitating pain that I was expecting. To me, a little pain to save someone’s life is undoubtedly worth it. The day after surgery was Halloween and I was even able to go to a GRiZ concert in Milwaukee and break it down on the dance floor!
A few weeks after the donation, I received a letter from the family of the patient to whom I donated my bone marrow. They were so grateful and couldn’t believe the Bone Marrow Registry had found a match and were able to save their son. I couldn’t imagine being in her shoes – having a family member who desperately needed a bone marrow transplant, and to see a random individual willing donating their bone marrow to potentially save them… they couldn’t have been more grateful. Anybody can be a hero. Be the change you want to see in the future. Register and help save someone’s life!
For Electric Forest’s fulfillment portion of my wish, I asked for the Be The Match National Marrow Donor Program to come and set up a registry at Electric Forest so that the Forest Family could have the chance to help save a life! I’ve been to the Forest for the past two years (this year will be my third), and have met some of the most wonderful people there – genuine, caring, friendly, and just all around beautiful people! The list of characteristics goes on, and on!
With that said, The Electric Forest Wish Machine isn’t going to make my wish come true by itself. Be The Match will have registry booth during the First Weekend, and Love Hope Strength will have a booth during the Second Weekend – most importantly, I need our Forest family to get involved. From what I’ve experienced, I know you to be great people and always willing to help others, and I hope to see many of you sign up for the registry now that you are aware of how easy it is to be a hero!” – Tyler
Tyler wishes to spread his selfless perspective of giving and community – to loved ones and strangers alike – bringing exposure to Bone Marrow Awareness and the potential to positively impact, or even save, a life. HQ is proud of Tyler’s considerate approach to life, and happy to announce that Tyler and his crew are invited to join the Forest Family in Good Life Village during the First Weekend of Electric Forest 2018!
THE ELECTRIC FOREST WISH MACHINE
The Wish Machine sparked inspiration from across the globe. From local communities in Michigan to as far as Tanzania and Cambodia, the Forest Family considered what they could do – for individuals, neighborhoods, communities, and societies – to help make the world a better place. Pledges included raising money and awareness for mental health, rare diseases, and sustainable efforts; donating clothing, personal items, and funds to charity drives and disaster clean-up efforts; volunteering time and resources to local humane societies, hospitals, and homeless shelters; and so much more.
The Wish Machine challenged the Forest Family to venture out into the world and spread positive action and good deeds. Now it’s time for The Forest to reward the most amazing, world-changing, and awe-inspiring acts of kindness.
